Time to get into S.H.A.P.E.

September 22, 2004, ECC Student Voice

S.H.A.P.E. (Student Health Advocacy Promotion Empowerment) held its first meeting Thursday, September 16 at 11:30AM in Room 273.

S.H.A.P.E. is a club that is being started this semester by Professor William Minniefield of the Social Science Department and Amy Blundell of the Center for Women, Leadership, and Diversity.

S.H.A.P.E. gathered to begin organizational work. The meeting ran smoothly and settled on 2 monthly meetings at as of yet unspecified times. It was also agreed that additional special meetings would be required to help the club get going.

Nancy Vanlear, of the Student Activities Office, spoke to the prospective S.H.A.P.E. members on the policies and procedures of the formation of clubs. She also spoke on budgetary matters and how a club requests funds. She also made clear the responsibility of the club to attend Senate meetings.

Nancy said, "A club member must attend senate meeting or be fined $50."

The members also discussed plans to attend Club Day on Tuesday, September 21, at 11:30 AM to 1PM in the Atrium of City Campus.

Beth Skurzewski has taken on the role of President.

The club's purpose is to provide students of Erie Community College an organization to work to promote health on campus and in the community. S.H.A.P.E. hopes to raise awareness of health issues in a helpful manner without creating unrealistic goals.

Professor Minniefield said, "You don't want to bring in someone who runs all day and tell people they should be like that. That's not reality."
